About Hydra
The island of Hydra is a relaxed, charming and small island about two hours away from the port of Athens (Piraeus). There are no cars allowed on the island, and the only modes of transportation are mules, horses, or your own two feet! The streets are all cobblestoned and most streets can be quite hilly, so please keep that in mind when packing shoes.
Hydra has long been one of Dimitri’s favourite Greek islands, and for good reason: it is a romantic place with lots of good food, local shopping, nature hikes, beaches, and history. Dimitri’s parents Sonia and Alex first came to Hydra on their honeymoon, and they have spent many family vacations here. When Rebekka first visited the island in 2019, she fell in love with the calm atmosphere and rich history of Hydra. Every time we visit, we swing by Leonard Cohen’s house on the island, and the Naval Museum even has a few paintings of Dimitri’s great-great-great-great-great grandfather, Konstantinos Kanaris.
We look forward to enjoying a weekend on this beautiful island with you all!
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get from Athens Airport to Hydra?
From the airport to the port of Athens (Piraeus), you can take a metro, bus or taxi which will all take between 60-90 minutes. The journey from Piraeus to Hydra is about two hours via ferry. The two major ferry companies are Hellenic Seaways and Alpha Line, and their complete ferry schedules for October will be posted around June/July.
Note: If your flight arrives too late to catch the last ferry, dont worry! Let us know and we can help you arrange a bus to a mainland town closer to Hydra, and a water taxi over to the island.
More information about transport can be found here.
Who can I contact with questions?
If you would like to make a speech, please contact Rebekka’s sister Marita, who will be the toastmaster. Her email is mabre@live.no.
More contact information will be posted shortly. For now you can email general questions to tententwentytwentywedding@gmail.com.
What is the dress code?
We want our guests to be comfortable! Think Mamma Mia (the movie), beach formal, or garden attire. See some inspiration photos here. Be aware that the streets are all cobblestoned, and it does get dark at night - high heels are not recommended!
Which hotels are best?
There is a myriad of hotel options on Hydra. You can find a list of recommendations here, and we have another list of additional good finds if those hotels book up. Anything in the central area near the port will be easily walkable to the wedding venues and local sights. Just be aware that once you leave the central port area, there are some pretty steep hills up to local B&Bs, AirBnBs, and some hotels.
We hope you can make it!
